Pressure resistance, body bending and operating-load strength.
QUALITY / ENGINEERING NOTES
Type testing as per
EN 1074-2
Our water-supply gate valves are type-tested in accordance with EN 1074-2. Test requirements are matched to valve size, operating arrangement and pressure rating.
Bending test assembly
A gate valve installed between supported pipe sections with suspended loading.
Load application
Lever and suspended-load arrangement at the valve test bench.
Torque measurement
Manual torque-wrench operation on a gate valve in the test fixture.
TEST PROGRAMME
Defined checks.
Traceable records.
EN 1074-2 addresses water-supply isolating valves, with EN 1074-1 providing the general requirements and referenced methods.
Leak-tightness and maximum operating torque.
Opening and closing cycles, followed by functional checks.
Valve identification, configuration, instruments, conditions and results.

EN 1074-2 · 5.2.3, 5.1.4 & ANNEX B
Operating & strength torque
Choose a gate-valve operating arrangement. MOT is the operating-torque limit; mST is the strength-test torque.
Other operating arrangements
Ring key and bar: MOT = DN + 60 N·m; mST = 5 × MOT, with a simultaneous 1,500 N·m bending moment on the operating mechanism. Handwheel: MOT = F × D / 2. Lever: MOT = F × L. The applicable manual force must be established for the operating arrangement.
EN 1074-1 · 5.1.1 & 5.2.2
Pressure requirements
Example ratings: PFA = 16 bar; PEA = 25 bar. PFA is allowable operating pressure; PEA is allowable site-test pressure.
Shell strength
p = max(PEA, 1.5 × PFA)
max(25, 1.5 × 16) = 25 bar
High-pressure seat test · water
Δp = 1.1 × PFA
1.1 × 16 = 17.6 bar
The low-pressure water seat test uses 0.5 bar. Use the actual valve ratings and applicable test method; the shell requirement is not automatically 1.5 × PFA.
EN 1074-2 · 5.1.3 / EN 1074-1 · ANNEX C
Valve-body bending load
For a DN100 example, the required bending moment is 2,200 N·m. The Annex C arrangement uses two symmetric supplementary forces and accounts for the assembly weight.
Schematic only · dimensions and loads are illustrative
- P
- Total weight of valve, pipes and water, in newtons
- L
- Valve end to nearest support, in metres
- b
- Valve face-to-face length, in metres
- a
- Half the spacing between applied forces, in metres
Example: M = 2,200 N·m; P = 800 N; L = 0.60 m; b = 0.30 m; a = 0.20 m.
F = (4,400 − 288) / 1.10
F ≈ 3,738.2 N per side
Geometry: L ≥ 0.005 × DN metres; a > b/2. Keep loads inside the supports; overhangs are limited to 0.001 × DN metres. Confirm the actual fixture geometry before determining its test load.
